Bottled without chill filtration, Auchentoshan American Oak is a triple-distilled Lowland single malt Scotch whisky matured exclusively in American bourbon casks. Resting at 80 proof, it retails for about $62.99.
The taste is fruity and almost effervescent with tangerine, mango, coconut, vanilla, and touches of clove and honey adding balance. The finish is fruity and sharp with citrus, clove, and a hint of cinnamon. Excellent!
Overall it drinks like the clearly young whisky that it is. But I can’t fault Auchentoshan for the move, and considering the budget pricing the distillery has set for it, it’s hard to fault its marketing either.
An initial note of rosewater, then Madeira, vanilla, developing musky peaches, and icing sugar. Spicy fresh fruit on the palate, chili notes, and more Madeira and vanilla.
While there’s nothing totally captivating here, there’s also nothing offensive. It’s a totally serviceable value drinker that’s easy to recommend at its price point, especially for a warm-weather sipper.
