Ardbeg Galileo 1999 is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky from Ardbeg Distillery, distilled in 1999 and bottled in 2012. The whisky was matured in a combination of first-fill ex-bourbon casks and ex-Marsala wine casks from Sicily. It is bottled at 49% ABV and was released as a limited edition.
Oven-dried seaweed chips with salt, fresh vanilla creme brûlée, hint of pipe tobacco. With regards to the finish, the burn is outstanding. Worthy of the theme. Long and intense, yet focused and nuanced. A lesser dram would explode all over the launchpad. This one slips the surly bounds of earth.
On the palate, peat and those fortified wine characteristics play together nicely, and in a way that works. The smoke and spice come together to create flavors of chocolate, vanilla pudding, and deeply burnt citrus fruits (flambe?).
Not as sweet here to start with burnt rope and pencil lead leading the way before inky phenolic smoke wafts out of the bottom. A good drinking strength; good texture.
