  • As the finish builds, the whisky takes steps that are lightly tropical in tone, more mango than pineapple, albeit touched with a light ashiness that keeps it grounded in Islay rather than warmer islands.

  • Ardbeg fans will likely find this to be a fun twist on a familiar profile, while those newer to the brand may need a little more time to suss out the various influences and semi-experimental blend.

  • A bit jammier than last year's Harpy's Tale, this scratches a different itch and is a lovely, wine-laced, smoky beast.

  • Nose:

Rich, buttery and berry sweet on the nose, tons of minerality combines with cherry, blackberry, toffee and currant. Big slate, bbq smoke, ash and cedar, vanilla bean and light butterscotch.

  • Taste:

Moderate palate — jammy and fun up front with loads of sweet berry, stewed fruits, blackberry and currant with ash, charcoal smoke, barbecued meats and cocoa.

  • Finish:

Long finish. The jamminess fades here a bit, supplanted by tons of butter cream, vanilla custard, slate and smoldering oak.

  • Overall:

A bit jammier than last year's Harpy's Tale, this scratches a different itch and is a lovely, wine-laced, smoky beast.

  • Score:

    88
