  • Honestly, there’s a lot of rebuke for a whisky this old being bottled at 40% ABV, but it works just fine.

  • Modern Ardbeg fanatics accustomed to an overload of peat may not get the fuss here, but there’s something to the idea of Ardbeg writ small that works.

  • Nose:

Heavy, acrid diesel character. Slate, rubber, black pepper, apple, butter, pear and some burning ashy wood.

  • Taste:

Moderate palate with sweet honey, lemon butter, butterscotch, toffee, apple butter, burning wood and minerality.

  • Finish:

Long finish. Pleasant balance of sweetness and acidity, with gobs of ashy smoke.

  • Overall:

Honestly, there’s a lot of rebuke for a whisky this old being bottled at 40% ABV, but it works just fine. This release shows that well-aged Ardbeg can still have a pleasant complexity to it.
