Amante 1530 is the latest venture from Grammy Award-winning rock legend Sting and his wife, actress Trudie Styler. The couple opted for a 15% ABV amaro produced in Rome, Italy. Based on its color, aroma and the label's instruction to mix into a spritz, this appears to be a competitor against the ever-popular Aperol. Let's see how it stacks up.

  • Tangerines, apples and Jujyfruits make their presence known at first sip, followed by a hit of tart citrus pith that sinks into the palate. Hints of rosemary, sage and tea simmer in the background.

  • The initial rush on the palate is reminiscent of Hi-C, with sweetened tangerine and candied orange notes dominant. Secondary elements of brewed tea and sage add some nuance, but both are light and indistinct.

  • The palate echoes vanilla sweetness, mixing it with orange peel and a hint of grapefruit pith bitterness on the long finish.

  • A viscous mouthfeel, with a semi-sweet character oddly reminiscent of bubble gum. The overall flavor is orange citrus, with a neat dose of bitter herbs to bring things into balance.

  • Nose:

Hugely sweet on the nose, somewhere halfway between SunnyD and vanilla.

  • Taste:

The flavor is a tug-of-war between sugary viscosity and a distinct bitter bite. Tangerines, apples and Jujyfruits make their presence known at first sip, followed by a hit of tart citrus pith that sinks into the palate. Hints of rosemary, sage and tea simmer in the background.

  • Finish:

Citrus pith builds and settles. The absence of bitter/herbal notes on the rose rear their head in full force on the finish.

  • Overall:

I like this! The overall vibe is more akin to a fruit liqueur than an amaro, so much so that it might work as a replacement for triple sec in a margarita. Following instructions to mix this into a spritz, I was quite happy with the results. It's a versatile standby to keep on the bar cart for cocktails in and outside the usual amaro range.
