Launched in the tail end of 2024, Alma Del Jaguar Añejo features a blend of three batches distilled at the Feliciano Vivanco distillery. The exact breakdown is: Double-barreled batch (65%), aged 6.7 months in American oak and 11 months in French oak; Single American oak batch (18%), aged 20.7 months; Single American oak batch (17%), aged 20.2 months. Though blended age statements are not uncommon in the tequila world, it's rare for a brand to give an exact breakdown of the contents. Good for them. Alma del Jaguar was founded in 2023 to protect wild jaguars in Mexico and the U.S., a mission that includes sizable donations to the Northern Jaguar Project, which manages the Northern Jaguar Reserve in Sonora, Mexico.

  • Nose:

Dense, caramelized aromas of sweet maple, molasses, custard, hazelnut, oak and cloves. Smells like it's all been baked down in the oven for a couple of hours. There's a bit of tannic astringency that reminds me of a red wine, as well as a distinct banana note that I remember leaping out the glass in the brand's Reposado.

  • Taste:

The front palate kicks off with hints of rose petal, fig and plum before giving way to churned butter and caramel, which remain the dominant flavors for the rest of the experience. Settles in with softer notes of agave, milk chocolate, maple candies, nutmeg, flaky sea salt and root beer.

  • Finish:

Medium-length finish with a surprising amount of those red wine/tannic notes from the nose. Things get a little spicier in the finer details with flashes of white pepper, cinnamon and candied ginger.

  • Overall:

A real bruiser of an añejo brimming with thick, custardy caramel flavor at every turn. If the team was hoping to recreate melted ice cream in a glass, then they picked the perfect barrels for the job.

  • Score:

    89
