  • Soft sipping, creamy rye that has some vintage characteristics that fail to impress.

  • If you’re a fan of oak, this is a no-brainer. That said, the tannin is very heavy, accentuated by the lower proof.

  • What it lacks in an expansive flavor profile, it tries to make up for with a great mouthfeel and aged oak base.

  • Sazerac’s latest 18 year-old rye is my favorite of the line from recent memory, but it may not please every rye drinker angling for a bottle.

  • Nose:

All rye on the nose, although soft. Full of sweetness and a touch of crème brûlée. Cracked pepper, some herbal grassiness and a pinch of orange. Baking spice, clove and cracked pepper sing.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel with a heavy touch of oak. Sweet cream, cracked pepper, candied ginger, orange peel and more developing oak. There’s a lot of oak here, adding a subtle spice to go along with the rye spice as well.

  • Finish:

Moderate finish with cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, some herbal character and a pop of tannin and orange peel.

  • Overall:

If you’re a fan of oak, this is a no-brainer. That said, the tannin is very heavy, accentuated by the lower proof. This is a great rye, although my crown goes to Thomas Handy in this year’s rye set from the Antique Collection.
