Coming in at 19 years and three months old, this is the oldest of the 23 Eagle Rare bourbons ever released in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. This bourbon was pulled from barrels aged in Buffalo Trace's Warehouses C, I, K, M and Q and bottled at 101 proof as usual — a nod to the original Eagle Rare release in 1975.

  • This is delicious stuff. I went in expecting excess oak, and this delivered well beyond that. It’s an easy pour to love, although it will be a hard one to find. Stalk this Eagle with confidence.

  • The oldest Eagle Rare 17 Year ever, it’s the best 101 proof version yet and will be a memorable edition thanks to its prominent “dusty” funk note.

  • It’s atypically old, yes, but the bourbon does more than just lean on strong oak influence.

  • The finish is warming and lengthy, with barrel char, wood shavings, salted caramel, and coffee grounds.

  • Nose:

Fruity, full of caramel and honey. Apples, pears, cherries, oranges and blackberry combine with sweet vanilla bean, caramel and butterscotch with a pinch of pepper.

  • Taste:

The palate is rich and oddly not as oaky as I expected — nothing short of a win for Eagle Rare at this age. I expected nothing but oak, and instead this is a bouquet of fruits, honey and just enough tannin.

  • Finish:

Long finish, sweet and caramel-forward with apple and luxardo cherry resting alongside it.

  • Overall:

This is delicious stuff. I went in expecting excess oak, and this delivered well beyond that. It’s an easy pour to love, although it will be a hard one to find. Stalk this Eagle with confidence.
