This release from the up-and-coming independent bottler, 15 STARS, is an 8-year-old blended bourbon finished in a single cask that previously contained Vino de Naranja, a sweet orange wine produced in Spain. VDN is made by macerating orange peels in white wine. Only 316 bottles of this 102.8-proof bourbon are available. Fitting for a whiskey company owned and run by a father-son team, this very limited bourbon released just in time for Father's Day 2024. It can be purchased from the 15 STARS website for $139.

  • Sharp and biting and effusively orangey, I almost want to try a splash in a margarita instead of triple sec.

  • Nose:

Very full-bodied, sweet nose. Creamy orange ice cream, butterscotch pudding, oak, caramel cake, waffle cone and a delicate orange blossom note.

  • Taste:

Lovely palate with a huge orange blossom note, alongside creamy vanilla cake, cocoa, cherries, cinnamon and some clove. Sweet orange plays nicely with rye spice.

  • Finish:

Medium to long finish, kicked off by a big orange peel note, plus vanilla custard, cinnamon and cracked pepper.

  • Overall:

This is a delight. It has plenty of orange influence, but not an overpowering amount. It's not the most complicated bourbon in the world, but it’s damn delicious.
