  • While few things in life are perfect, the combo here is really classic and carefully crafted rye whiskey.

  • 15 Stars Founder’s Reserve Fine Aged Rye is a more aged and complex blend of ryes from multiple states with improved flavors compared to its predecessor, though its sub-100 proof slightly hinders its full potential.

  • The nose carried cinnamon, spearmint and melted table sugar in the main, with a solid note of musty oak. Sipping on Founder’s Reserve yields candy corn plus vanilla at first, before yielding to ginger and cloves, and then finally peppery wood.

  • “Fine Aged” it may all be, but this one doesn’t drink with quite the same maturity as, say, a Michter’s 10 Year Old Rye or even the recent Bulleit 12 Years Old.

  • Nose:

The nose is nicely balanced — oaky, sweet, spicy and floral. Oak and tannin are joined by tea, molasses, clove, lavender, peppercorn, gingerbread and sarsaparilla.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel. Oak, ginger, clove, caramel, tea, apricot, candied lemon and a nice flair of toasted oak.

  • Finish:

The toasted oak note continues onto the finish, followed by peppercorns, sassafras, tannin, powdered ginger and a touch of frosting.

  • Overall:

A wonderful, complex rye. It's not my favorite release to date from 15 STARS — which is consistently putting out excellent whiskey — but it's very good.

  • Score:

    90
