  • Definitely a solid, if slow-starting, rye.

  • We’ll hope for some more complexity in Batch 2, and perhaps a touch of older rye could smooth out the prickle of heat and slight sense of youth

  • Blending 3 different aged ryes from 3 different states is a great premise, but 15 Stars First West Fine Aged Rye doesn’t quite reach its full potential.

  • Nose:

Spicy and green up front — a bit of young oak, some youth and ethanol, and a crackle of spice and buttercream.

  • Taste:

Some spearmint, rye spice, black pepper, candied ginger. There’s a touch of ethanol here; it’s got some heat to it. Punchy.

  • Finish:

Short to medium finish that packs a punch of ethanol, spearmint, young oak and a touch of brown sugar and buttercream.

  • Overall:

Not my favorite 15 STARS release to date, but this also appears to be the brand's youngest yet. We’ll hope for some more complexity in Batch 2, and perhaps a touch of older rye could smooth out the prickle of heat and slight sense of youth. This release does make a killer Manhattan though, and it’s easy to enjoy on the rocks.
