Foursquare Rum Distillery announced on September 24 that the brand released a 16-year-old Single Blended Rum as part of its Exceptional Cask Selection program. Mark XXVI Magisterium is what the Barbados rum brand refers to as a “one-of-a-kind” release that Master Blender Richard Seale only chooses when he finds casks of “exceptional quality.”

Foursquare shares that Magisterium is a blend of three 16-year-old single blended rums.

Single blended rum is a category of blended rum whose components were all distilled at a single distillery.

In the case of Magisterium, its components were all distilled in two stills: a Double-Retort Pot Still and a Continuous Twin Column Coffey Still. Out of the three rums, two were double-matured.

One spent three years aging in ex-bourbon casks and 13 years in ex-oloroso sherry barrels. The second rum spent nine years in ex-bourbon casks and seven years in ex-oloroso sherry. The final rum was matured exclusively in ex-bourbon casks for 16 years.

The rum’s blending and maturation process was under the stewardship of master distiller and master blender Richard Seale of Foursquare Rum Distillery. The rum clocks in at 116 proof and hosts a suggested retail price of $159.99.

In March 2023, Foursquare unveiled Touchstone, its most recent release within its highly sought-after Exceptional Cask Selection Series. The rum was a 2008 vintage that matured in ex-bourbon casks as a Single Blended Rum, then spent two more years resting in CAMUS Caribbean Expedition Cognac casks, yielding a distinctive expression.

Previous releases of Foursquare’s Exceptional Cask Selection have achieved high praise from critics. If you’d like to see what the experts thought of 2022’s release, click here.
