Roundup: Every Rum That Won a Double Gold Medal at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition

Bayou White Rum won a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
There are many spirits contests out there, but the one that matters is the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
It’s the booze-soaked version of the Olympics, and liquor brands from all over the world compete for the coveted Double Gold metal. Landing one of these marks a huge step for any brand and can lead to distribution deals, global recognition and more.
The San Francisco World Spirits Competition is especially beneficial from a consumer standpoint. We can all agree that the spirits industry is oversaturated in all categories, and decision fatigue is about as real as it gets when trying to figure out the perfect rum for your bar cart at your local liquor shop. Fortunately, with prestigious contests like the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, buyers can trust that spirits that place well in the contest have been officially “vetted.”
The San Francisco World Spirits Competition is 24 years old and is the oldest spirits competition in the world. It was founded by the Tasting Alliance and hit a major milestone in 2022 when it was recognized as the largest spirits competition in the world with almost 5,000 entries. This year, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition was held in California, and judges tasted a cornucopia of whiskeys, scotches, tequilas, mezcals, gins, rums and more.
What Does It Take To Win A Double Gold At The SFWSC?
Judges who taste the thousands of spirits at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition can award Bronze, Silver, Gold, Double Gold or even Platinum medals. If a spirit wins a Double Gold Medal for three years in a row, it qualifies for the prestigious Platinum Medal.
The spirits are all tasted blind, and according to Uproxx, some judges can taste as many as 312 spirits in four days. These judges typically come from highly respected fields in the alcohol industry and work as distributors, bar owners, liquor store owners, authors and spirits experts. The judges taste in panels, and typically work about six to 10 panels each day where they taste approximately 60 to 70 pours. The judges combine their scores at the end of the session and if every judge has awarded the spirit a Gold medal, it earns the classification of a Double Gold. If judges disagree, they all have to negotiate until they can agree on giving a spirit a score.
Below is a list of rums that made the cut and were awarded the prestigious Double Gold medal.
