The New Ready-to-Drink Whiskey Sour You Need to Try

The ready-to-drink cocktail category continues to expand, but quality varies widely. With its latest permanent release, Suntory’s On The Rocks aims to close the gap between convenience and a properly made classic.

The On The Rocks Whiskey Sour blends Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon with citrus, offering a bottled take on one of America’s most recognizable cocktails. Developed in collaboration with Suntory Global Spirits, the release is designed to deliver a consistent, bar-style experience without requiring any mixing.

The Whiskey Sour has long been a staple. The straightforward combination of whiskey, lemon juice and sweetness is simple, and balance is the key. It’s a cocktail that can easily miss the mark when pre-made, often skewing too sweet or overly acidic.

Here, the structure is built around Jim Beam’s approachable profile. The bourbon, brings familiar notes of caramel, vanilla and nuttiness — a foundation that translates cleanly into a cocktail format.

The ready-to-drink version clocks in at 20% ABV and is packaged in both 375-milliliter ($12.99) and 750-milliliter ($24.99) bottles.

Unlike many RTD offerings, this release leans into its cocktail credentials. The recipe was developed by New York-based Joaquín Simó, who aimed to replicate the balance of a freshly shaken whiskey sour.

That focus shows up in the texture and structure. Rather than tasting flat or diluted, the cocktail maintains a weight and viscosity that closely resembles a drink freshly shaken behind the bar.

How It Drinks

The nose leads with honeyed sweetness and fresh lemon, setting up a profile that feels both inviting and familiar.

On the palate, the texture stands out immediately. It carries a lightly viscous, “just-shaken” quality, with enough body to support the flavors. Citrus remains bright without overwhelming the drink, while the classic nutty Beam profile shines through cleanly underneath.

This is certainly one of the better ready-to-drink whiskey sours I’ve tasted, and it’s good enough to rival your average homemade or bar-made whiskey sour.

Ready-to-drink cocktails often target convenience first, with flavor as a secondary consideration. This release makes a stronger case for balance being the priority.

It works as an entry point for casual drinkers looking for a reliable whiskey cocktail, but it also holds up for more experienced bourbon fans who want something quick without sacrificing structure.

In summary: By pairing a recognizable bourbon with a balanced citrus profile and giving attention to texture, On The Rocks delivers a whiskey sour that feels closer to a freshly made cocktail than most bottled alternatives.

It won’t replace a skilled bartender, but it narrows the gap — and sometimes that’s all you need.
