As pre-mixed tequila cocktails and hard kombucha graze new heights of popularity, one brand has taken it upon itself to blend trends into one.

Available now at retail locations across the US, Thorntail Hard Agave is produced from fermented Blue Weber agave that skips distillation (the step that raises tequila to a boozy 80-proof). Canned at 5% ABV, Thorntail is created and produced in the Pacific Northwest using agave sourced from Jalisco, Mexico.

Though it may not taste or look like it, Thorntail follows in the footsteps of pulque, a frothy fermented agave beverage originally conceived in Mesoamerican times that predates tequila and mezcal by centuries. According to folklore, the drink was first discovered when a lightning bolt struck an agave plant and spilled charred honey from within.

“We wanted to create a delicious alternative to the canned seltzers and overly carbonated vodka drinks that were on the market,” says CEO and founder Joel VandenBrink.

“We thought about the clean health benefits of fermenting agave and saw an opportunity to create a more delicious, refreshing product that tasted crisp and could be enjoyed throughout the day without feeling the impact the next day. We created Thorntail to fit into our customers’ lives and where they want to be — with friends and family, out in nature and planning the next adventure.”

Thorntail is hitting the market with sea salt lime, peach strawberry and passionfruit guava flavors. If you’d like to learn more, check out the brand’s website here.
