Oprah Winfrey Shares Cocktail Tribute to ‘The Color Purple’

On Sunday, iconic television producer Oprah Winfrey celebrated the upcoming premiere of “The Color Purple” with a custom craft cocktail. While not the mixologist behind the film-inspired drink, Winfrey revealed the bright concoction’s recipe in a video shared on social media.

@thecolorpurple has taken over my life so much that now we’re making Purple drinks at my house,” Winfrey wrote on Instagram. “Recipe in the video by @lerafranklin that you can make cocktails or mocktails—and just in time for the movie ?.”

To craft the signature “The Color Purple” drink, start by combining apple juice, ginger juice, beet juice and a splash of lemon juice in a mixing glass and set it aside. While the portions of these juices were not disclosed in the clip, we suggest 1/3 cup of each main juice and 1/2 ounce of lemon juice. Next, fill a shaker with ice and pour in one ounce of the juice mixture, 1/2 ounce of lime juice, 1/4 ounce of blue curaçao and 1/2 ounce of simple syrup. Shake vigorously for about 10 seconds and then gently stir in a desired amount of sparkling water. Strain your drink into a chilled martini glass, top it with a blackberry garnish and enjoy!

To transform this concoction from mocktail to full-strength cocktail, Winfrey suggested adding in gin, vodka or tequila. If you want to go all-in on purple, we recommend using Empress 1908 Indigo Gin.

According to Winfrey, this drink is perfect for the holiday season — and all your “purple activities.”

Set to premiere on Dec. 25., “The Color Purple (2023)” is a musical coming-of-age period drama directed by Blitz Bazawule, based on the 1982 epistolary novel by Alice Walker and the subsequent stage musical. It stands as the second film adaptation of the novel, with Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones returning as producers, along with Scott Sanders and Winfrey, who starred in the 1985 film.
