University of Edinburgh Honors its Rich Heritage With Small Batch Gin

The University of Edinburgh has recently unveiled its own exclusive small-batch gin, which aims to honor its rich heritage and the vibrant spirit of the city it resides in.

Gordon Chalmers, Head of Retail at the University, emphasized the new gin’s inspiration from the longstanding traditions of both the institution and the city in an interview with local news outlet The Student.

“Our newly launched small batch gin is inspired by the rich traditions of the University and the city itself,” Chalmers explained.

The gin’s label showcases the University crest and prominently features the founding year, 1583, symbolizing the University’s deep-rooted history. According to The Student, the gin’s creation was motivated by the success of the limited-edition University Whisky in 2022, aiming to offer something exceptional for gin enthusiasts.

The University collaborated with Gleann Mor Spirits, a company overseeing distilleries in Glasgow and Edinburgh, for the production and bottling of its gin. Gleann Mor Spirits, also the Official Spirits Partner for the Hibernian Football Club, provided various gin samples for blind tastings, and the final product was selected “purely on the merits of its fabulous taste,” Chalmers informed The Student.

Notably, this is not the first time the University’s crest has graced a gin label. Previously, a collaboration with the Royal School of Veterinary Studies resulted in a special gin commemorating the school’s bicentenary.

The University of Edinburgh 1583 Small Batch Scottish Gin is now available for sale for £29.99 (about $36) through the University’s online gift shop. Bottled at 40% ABV, the new tipple offers tasting notes of elderflower, citrus, basil and summer berries.
