Ryan Reynolds Calls on Matchbox Twenty Frontman Rob Thomas to Sing Songs About Aviation Gin

On Tuesday, Ryan Reynolds and Aviation American Gin unveiled a nationwide commercial set to air on both FX and Hulu.

This latest ad campaign, created by the talented minds at Maximum Effort, takes a humorous spin as Rob McElhenney, co-owner of Welsh soccer club Wrexham A.F.C., wasn’t able to make an appearance. To fill the void, Reynolds called upon the skills of a different Rob — none other than Rob Thomas, the lead singer of American rock band Matchbox Twenty.

Reynolds kicks off the video with a playful jest, remarking how Wrexham fans have grown accustomed to seeing him alongside another Rob, but cheekily points out that certain legalities prevent McElhenney from participating in Aviation Gin commercials. With a jovial ambiance, Reynolds then turns to Thomas, urging him to serenade the audience with songs celebrating Aviation Gin, preferably with a Welsh twist.

Throughout the video, Reynolds and Thomas engage in witty banter while sharing the screen behind the bar. The duo seals their camaraderie by clinking glasses, each filled with an Aviation American Gin Negroni.

This advertising venture is just one in a series of recent commercials featuring Reynolds and Wrexham A.F.C., a testament to Aviation Gin’s commitment to delivering entertainment with a dash of humor. Some other notable commercials in this partnership include “First & Second,” “Win or Lose” and “Flower Shop,” all of which have previously aired on FX and Hulu.

The creative team behind this ad, Reynolds’ own production company Maximum Effort, has executed this project with the collaboration of Loon Productions, under the direction of Oren Brimer.

In November 2020, actor and Aviation Gin owner Reynolds and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star McElhenney purchased Wrexham A.F.C. through their RR McReynolds Company LLC. The $2.5 million acquisition was supported by an overwhelming 98.6% of the 2,000 Wrexham Supporters Trust members who voted.

In September 2022, Reynolds’ American gin brand opened the doors to a new distillery and headquarters in Portland, Oregon. Other than producing gin, the location offers an immersive escape room experience, a cocktail lounge and tasting room.
