Plymouth Gin’s Splashy New Limited-Edition Bottle Pays it Forward to Endangered Seagrass Habitats

With Earth Day approaching, Plymouth Gin has doubled down on its partnership with the Ocean Conservation Trust for a second limited-edition bottling.

Inscribed with designs of swirling seagrass, the brand’s new aquamarine-tinted bottle was created in collaboration with OCT’s Blue Meadows project. Blue Meadows aims to protect and restore around 700 hectares of seagrass located off the coast of Falmouth, England. Inching dangerously toward extinction, the habitat type has declined by nearly half across the UK since the 1930s.

Plymouth Gin has pledged to donate £1 ($1.24) to the project for each bottle sold of its new “Ocean Edition” bottling.

“Our long-term partnership with Plymouth Gin has allowed us to drive awareness of the importance of a healthy ocean by supporting our work, centered around people taking positive action,” Roger Maslin, CEO of the Ocean Conservation Trust, said in a news release. “With every sip we’re raising a glass to protect our ocean and marine life, and together, we will be able to achieve our vision of a healthy, thriving ocean.”

Plymouth, founded in its eponymous hometown in 1793, ranks among England’s oldest continually operating gin brands. Much has changed behind the scenes over the centuries. The distiller was bought out by French spirits giant Pernod Ricard in 2008, a deal that soon refitted its distillery with hydroelectricity power alongside fully recycled bottles and botanicals.

To this day, Plymouth is the only distillery in the world that produces Plymouth-style gin, a recipe that at one point in time was granted a protected designation of origin by the EU. Often described as a synthesis between London dry and Old Tom gin, the brand’s recipe was famously a favorite of Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Alfred Hitchcock.

“This new limited-edition bottle is the most recent step in Plymouth Gin’s three-year partnership with the OCT with both organizations situated amongst the stunning scenery of the South West coast,” said Ian Peart, commercial director for Pernod Ricard UK. “The Plymouth Gin distillery has its home on Plymouth harbor, at the heart of the local community, and, like gin is to tonic, its story is anchored in the benefits of the surrounding sea.”

Consumers in the U.K. can check out Plymouth Gin Sealife Edition at a suggested retail price of £20 ($25) beginning on April 17.
