English Gin Producer Penrhos Spirits Takes Another Step Towards Sustainability With 100% Recycled Aluminum Bottles

On Wednesday, U.K.-based distillery Penrhos Spirits unveiled a 70-cl aluminum bottle design that will now be featured across its entire line of gins. Made in collaboration with packaging supplier Vetroplas and Spanish manufacturing partner Envases, the new vessels are said to reflect the brand’s commitment to both aesthetic distinction and environmental responsibility.

“At Penrhos farm, we live every day surrounded by greenery, our bees and beautiful nature,” Penrhos Spirits explained. “When our imperfectly perfect fruit wasn’t good enough for the shop shelf, and was going to waste, we thought there must be a better way for our farm and for the planet. And there was… But something was niggling us.”

“We were curious yet again, about a better way for our bottles too. A path of experimentation and discovery led us to our new 100% recycled aluminum bottles. Custom-made and completely reusable, recyclable and refillable, it felt like the perfect home for our imperfectly perfect fruit.”

As reported by Trend Hunter, the 70-cl aluminum bottles boast a 28/410 neck thread and are lined with a BPA NI PE liner. Additionally, these bottles undergo a unique printing process where artwork is layered over an opaque base coat, followed by a matte lacquer finish.

Beyond their visual charm, these aluminum bottles signify a deliberate step towards sustainability. Lightweight, unbreakable, reusable and fully recyclable, they offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional glass bottles. Penrhos Spirits also stated that its new packaging ensures the freshness and quality of its gin.

In August 2023, Penrhos Spirits teamed up with Oddbox, a pioneer in the fruit and vegetable subscription sector, to introduce a gin made using “wonky” cucumbers and apples in a shared effort to help minimize food waste.

Although Penrhos is the most recent gin producer to adopt aluminum bottles, numerous other brands have also incorporated comparable concepts into their packaging strategies. For example, Engine Gin has used its iconic motor oil can design since its inception in 2021. The same year, Isle of Harris Distillery unveiled its refillable and recyclable aluminum gin bottle. And back in 2019, Gin in a Tin debuted with its boxy metal containers.
