Venturing into the heart of North Carolina’s Highlands, Old Edwards Inn has partnered with Asheville’s Chemist Spirits and the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust (HCLT) to craft a bespoke botanical spirit, the “Old Edwards Discovery Gin.”
This collaboration is a dedication to preserving the rich natural heritage of the protected North Carolina Plateau, according to a press release. Embracing native wild juniper hand-harvested from a safeguarded parcel under HCLT’s guardianship, this gin aims to encapsulate the essence of the region.

“These mountains are part of one of only two temperate rain forests in the continental U.S. – full of amazing plants that grow only here, not to mention the animals that rely on them. We aim to help conserve these wildlands with the release of Old Edwards Discovery Gin,” shared Chemist Spirits Co-Founder Debbie Word, per the press release. “Every bottle is a celebration of the diverse flora and fauna that thrive in this breathtaking corner of the United States.”
In a bid to further champion HCLT’s work, the gin will not only be available for purchase online and at local ABC stores but will also feature prominently in signature craft cocktails across Old Edwards Hospitality’s properties, becoming an integral part of its offerings.
The Old Edwards Discovery Gin, with a blend of native Highlands juniper, sweet birch bark, native hemlock, Pitch Pine, Multiflora Rose and local sourwood honey, offers a lightweight, refreshing and botanical-forward experience, according to the distillery.
Priced at $42 per bottle, with a portion of proceeds directly contributing to HCLT, the Old Edwards Discovery Gin serves as a celebration of North Carolina’s diverse flora and fauna. Julie Schodt, HCLT’s Development Director, emphasized the collaborative spirit that fuels the non-profit organization’s conservation efforts.
“Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust began conserving our natural heritage 114 years ago when members of the newly formed town of Highlands came together to save our first property. Today, that same spirit of collaboration is what fuels HCLT’s conservation efforts,” Schodt said in the press release. “Partners like Chemist Spirits and Old Edwards Inn help remind those who love these mountains that each of us plays an important role in saving our wild places for the benefit of current and future generations.”
Recognized for its commitment to environmental preservation, Old Edwards Inn is the first hospitality provider in North Carolina to receive the NC Green Travel Award. This accolade underscores its dedication to seeking innovative ways to protect the natural resources of North Carolina.
