Indian Retailer reported on Monday that Nao Spirits, a brand based in India, unveiled a new release from Greater Than — Punk Gin.

Punk Gin is a playful, bright berry-colored gin that gets its shocking fuscia hue from strawberries macerated within the gin for 48 hours, according to Food Tech Biz.

“Pink Gins are all the rage, but most pink gins have artificial flavoring, color and lots of sugar, bearing little semblance to a real gin,” said Nao Spirits Co-Founder and CEO, Anand Virmani in a statement. “As the pioneering craft gin brand in India, we use every opportunity to guide the category forward and set the right example for what it means to be ‘craft.’ That is exactly what we did with Punk Gin – stuck to our principles in a fast-growing competitive landscape by using fresh ingredients and taking Pink Gin back to its origins and showcasing what it was really intended to be.”

Nao Spirits is known for its disruptive releases.  In November, Nao Spirits released a gin that was aged with aged and toasted cricket bats. Nao Spirits claimed the wood added a distinctive flavoring, and it tasted “almost like whisky.”

For Punk Gin, the team chose freshly picked strawberries from what Food Tech Biz reports as the quintessential region for strawberries in India, Mahabaleshwar. Because of the fresh ingredients used in the gin, the brand recommends keeping it refrigerated.

The outlet reports that just a hint of dried hibiscus flowers were added for additional brightness and acid. The brand claims the gin has aromas of fresh strawberries, lemon peel, black pepper and juniper.

The gin is set to release during Mahabaleshwar’s strawberry season and is available in Goa and Karnataka. The brand intends to expand its footprint to Haryana.
