‘Fit for a King and Queen’: Ludlow Distillery Releases Coronation Rose Gin Inspired by Turkish Delight

U.K.-based spirits producer Ludlow Distillery is marking King Charles III’s upcoming coronation with a limited-edition gin inspired by the flavors of Turkish delight and the master distiller’s special trip to the gardens of Highgrove.

Coronation Rose Gin’s story begins with a visit Master Distiller Shaun Ward and his husband Peter took to the gardens of Highgrove, the private home of the King. The garden’s architecture, including a secluded walled garden inspired by Islamic designs, and Ward’s experiences in Istanbul and Izmir, Turkey, sparked the idea for a gin with Turkish flavors like rose, lemon and dried dates.

Ward also drew inspiration from Westminster Abbey’s cosmetic pavement, which is set to be the site of the coronation of King Charles III, and its similarity to the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. Then, a visit Ward took to the RHS Malvern Spring Show 2022 solidified his desire to handcraft a gin with love, similar to the process of creating and enjoying gardens.

“I experienced first hand the remarkable energy and commitment that goes into creating incredible gardens, and it was here that I wondered could I create a bespoke gin with a horticultural theme for Spring 2023,” Ward shared.

“None of us knew then that we would be celebrating a coronation, and so the two ideas started to collide. Handcrafting gin with love – there are so many synergies with creating and enjoying gardens.”

Made from juniper, coriander, angelica root, orris, rose, hibiscus petals and “just a touch of classic lemon,” Coronation Rose Gin is an elegantly floral take on a traditional dry gin. And, according to the distillery, it is best served in a light gin and tonic garnished with dried hibiscus petals and a few black peppercorns.

Other signature serves include a martini, Charles’ favorite cocktail, or with Dubbonet, similar to how Queen Elizabeth II famously enjoyed her gin.

Find the limited edition Coronation Rose Gin for £42.99 per 42% ABV, 70cl bottle. Preorders are now available, with shipping or collection to take place on April 27.
