Puerto de Indias, a gin distiller based in Carmona, Spain, is taking a unique approach to raise awareness about the gender pay gap in honor of International Women’s Day (IWD).
As reported by the Scottish Grocer on Thursday, the spirits company has sent out special edition bottles of its Blackberry Gin to influencers, bartenders and journalists across Spain ahead of IWD, which falls on March 8th. These bottles, not available for public sale, contain 14.3% less liquid than the standard version, symbolizing the 14.3% pay gap between men and women per hour, according to data from the Office for National Statistics.
To amplify the campaign online, Puerto de Indias has called on recipients of the special edition bottles to participate in the #shakeforpayequality initiative. They are encouraged to make a cocktail, share the process in a video on social media and “raise a glass” to women across the U.K.
Puerto de Indias hopes that this unique campaign, dubbed #TheUnfairBottle, will draw attention to the gender pay gap issue in the country.
“Puerto de Indias Blackberry was created by the women at our distillery so we felt it was the perfect gin to be used in this special bottle and campaign to address the gender pay gap issue in the UK,” explained Puerto de Indias innovation and international manager, Isabela Lluch, per the Scottish Grocer.
“From 5 pm of Friday 8 March, we’re looking forward to creating enough noise to change things, while also raising a glass to all those hardworking professionals who put their heart and soul into what they do,” she added. “We’re proud that there is no pay gap between men and women in our company and we want to do our part to make it happen everywhere.”
