In commemoration of International Women’s Day (March 8) and Women’s History Month, Freeland Spirits has unveiled a limited-edition Old Tom Gin, paying tribute to the trailblazing women who have significantly impacted the spirits industry. As reported by Food & Wine on Friday, the 114-proof offering is crafted by female leaders in the distilling field and aims to raise funds for women in the drinks industry.
Molly Troupe, one of the youngest female master distillers globally, and Victoria Butler, Uncle Nearest‘s master blender and the first Black female master blender, spearheaded the creation of this distinct spirit. The new gin was made by aging Freeland Dry Gin for six months in Uncle Nearest whiskey barrels. According to the brand, the final result offers a nose of vanilla, lemon, candied orange and pine, alongside a velvety and subtly sweet palate with notes of candied orange, baking spice and creme brulee.
“As a female-founded, owned, and led brand, supporting other women entrepreneurs is just in our DNA,” shared Butler, per Food & Wine. “The Freeland Old Tom Gin is refreshing with hints of honeysuckle and oakiness that come through because of our Uncle Nearest barrels.”
Freeland Spirits, a business deeply rooted in female entrepreneurship, is furthering its support for women in the food and beverage industry through a partnership with national nonprofit Regarding HER. $5 from every sale of Freeland Old Tom Gin will be allocated to the organization.
Priced at $49.95, Freeland Old Tom Gin can be purchased through Freeland Spirits’ online shop — while supplies last.
Freeland Spirits’ last release was Forest Gin in June 2023. Inspired by the Forest Park, an expansive urban forest reserve five blocks from the distillery, the expression bottles up chanterelle mushrooms, Douglas fir tips, salal berries and nettles. The brand also produces Freeland Gin, offering tasting notes of zesty citrus, garden herbs and warm spice; Freeland Dry Gin, which is bottled at 57% ABV because “strong women deserve strong gin”; and an Oregon Pinot Noir oak barrel-rested bourbon. In the past, the brand also offered a genever-inspired gin called Geneva, promising flavors of rye, savory botanicals and Willamette Valley hazelnuts.
