The Shed Distillery has successfully introduced its Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin into the burgeoning Chinese market. As reported by RTE on Tuesday, this expansion aligns with a robust trend, as Irish gin exports to China have surged by nearly 200% in the last five years — with a particular demand for high-end gin labels.
Marking “a pivotal milestone” for the company, Founder Pat Rigney emphasized the significance of this foray into the Chinese market, foreseeing substantial job creation locally and heightened global competitiveness. The introduction of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin will unfold gradually in key Chinese cities like Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen over the ensuing months.
According to RTE, EKO Integrated Services, acting as The Shed Distillery’s distribution partner in China, is optimistic about the vast potential for the Leitrim brand in the new market. Last November, EKO Integrated Services introduced Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin at the China International Import Expo, where Founder Pat Rigney noted an “extraordinary response” to the brand.
“They were intrigued by the Chinese elements of the brand, which uses gunpowder tea from China as one of the main botanicals in the gin, which is slow-distilled by hand with oriental botanicals and gunpowder tea in Leitrim,” Rigney continued, per The Irish Independent.
With China’s imports projected to reach a staggering $17 trillion in the next five years, this launch becomes integral to The Shed Distillery’s sustained global competitiveness. Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin, recognized for its rapid growth as one of the world’s fastest-growing gin brands, is currently exported to over 80 countries.
In January, The Shed Distillery announced a limited-edition ceramic Chinese Dragon bottling, coinciding with the business’ tenth-anniversary celebration.
“Our Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin journey commenced in China where we discovered gunpowder tea,” Rigney explained.
“This year, the Chinese Year of the Dragon, The Shed Distillery celebrates our tenth anniversary, which we mark with our special limited-edition ceramic Chinese Dragon bottle of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin, celebrating the coming together of our two unique cultures.”
“Our extraordinary team at the Shed Distillery are intrinsic to moments like today,” he added. “We prize our partnership with the remarkable community here in Drumshanbo, and our shared vision which has guided our journey over the last ten years, and led to making today’s announcement come to be.”
