Brand Known for its ‘Gunpowder’ Gin Recruits Abacaxi, Otherwise Known as Brazilian Pineapples, For New Bottling

Drumshanbo

Drumshanbo Irish Gunpowder Gin is expanding its award-winning, regionally-inspired catalog with a splash of Brazilian pineapples.

The distiller’s latest expression was officially unveiled on Thursday, per The Spirits Business, though images of the yellow and green bottle have been making the rounds online since as early as February. According to founder PJ Rigney, the bottling was inspired by a trip to Natal, Brazil during the country’s Carnival celebrations. There, he fell in love with the tart tropical flavor, known locally as “abacaxi,” Portuguese for “thorny fruit.”

Like all of Drumshanbo’s products, the spirit is distilled with eight core botanicals: juniper berries, angelica root, orris root, caraway seed, coriander seed, meadowsweet, cardamom and star anise. The recipe is then vapor-infused with gunpowder tea, grapefruit, lime and, in this case, Brazilian pineapples.

The expression is expected to roll out across the U.S. starting Sept. 1 at a suggested retail price of $37.

Drumshanbo was conceived in 2016 by husband-and-wife team PJ and Denise Rigney. The brand’s products are tailored around the signature inclusion of gunpowder tea, said to impart “bold and bright” flavors with a “slightly spicy freshness. Beyond its flagship gin, expressions include California Orange Citrus, Sardinian Citrus and a Sausage Tree Vodka distilled with Irish nettle.

Those in search of a maltier alternative can also find Drumshanbo’s Single Pot Still Irish whiskey.
