Couple Married for 63 Years Reveals the Secret to a Long-Lasting Relationship: A Good Gin and Tonic

In an exclusive Valentine’s Day celebration at Care UK’s Llys Cyncoed home in Cardiff, three couples, boasting a cumulative 199 years of matrimony, shared their invaluable insights into the secrets of an enduring relationship.

As reported by the Shropshire Star on Wednesday, Josephine and Aubrey Langley, aged 90 and 91, respectively, waltzed into each other’s lives at the Mostyn Dance Hall in 1958. The couple reminisced about their first date, which transpired in the back row of a cinema in Pontypool. Josephine Langley, with a fondness for culinary skills, underscored the importance of knowing how to craft an exemplary cocktail.

“A husband that knows how to barbecue and make an exceptionally good gin and tonic,” she emphasized.

Her partner added that another key to a long-lasting connection is “a good sense of humor.”

Their enduring connection culminated in a wedding at St. Peter’s Church in Blaenavon on February 27, 1960, with their 64th anniversary just around the corner.

Olwen and Arthur Hayward, aged 100 and 101, celebrated over 75 years of marriage, crediting their enduring union to a loving family. Recognized as the 15th U.K. couple both over 100, the Haywards met in 1943, enjoying their first date with a scenic walk at Pennard, Gower. Their 1949 church ceremony was attended by 40 guests, leading to a family that now includes two children, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Meanwhile, John and Patricia Chesney, aged 84 and 83, marked 61 years of marriage with humor and advice. Patricia Chesney jokingly advised young couples to “run, run, run,” yet suggested letting the husband think he’s the boss, provided he obeys his wife.

According to the Shropshire Star, the Llys Cyncoed residents concluded the evening with a special dinner, expressing gratitude to the couples for sharing their timeless love stories. Virgil Frincu, the general manager, highlighted the joy of reminiscing and the wisdom shared during the celebration.

Aligning with the theme of longevity, in June 2023, a 100-year-old woman said that her secret to a long life is drinking plenty of gin. The same month, 74-year-old American fashion designer Vera Wang attributed her timeless beauty to a regimen of vodka cocktails and ample sleep.
