On Thursday, Scottish whiskey distillery Bruichladdich unveiled its inaugural entry into the barrel-aged gin category with the release of The Islay Cask Matured Gin Range. Taking inspiration from the classifications of reposado and añejo tequilas, the collection features The Botanist Islay Cask Rested Gin and The Botanist Islay Cask Aged Gin.

This release also marks the first innovation to launch in the broader U.S. market since the brand’s introduction in 2014.

“We are excited to introduce The Botanist Islay Cask Matured Gin Range in the U.S. and expand The Botanist brand in our market,” Nicolas Beckers, CEO and president of Rémy Cointreau Americas, said in a press release.

“These exquisite new liquids exemplify the innovative spirit and award-winning craftsmanship of our distillery and we look forward to introducing them to U.S. consumers.”

Crafted by blending approximately 16 cask types from diverse regions, The Botanist Islay Cask Rested Gin undergoes a minimum six-month aging process in Bruichladdich’s Islay warehouse. The brand emphasized its distinctive characteristics, including heightened palate viscosity, achieved through a blend of warm, spiced wood and The Botanist’s intricate botanical mix.

Meanwhile, The Botanist Islay Cask Aged Gin offers a combination of roughly six cask types from various regions and is aged for a minimum of three years in the distillery’s warehouse. According to the spirit producer, this gin offers a creamy and viscous mouthfeel, featuring tasting notes of fresh fruit, vanilla ice cream and toasted oak.

The Botanist added that the two new gins can be sipped neat, like high-end whisky or tequila, or served with ice and an orange twist. Other recommended cocktails include a Martinez or Negroni.

“The complexity of The Botanist and its unparalleled quality make it a pleasure to experiment with,” explained Bruichladdich Distillery’s Head Distiller, Adam Hannett, in the press release.

“We have watched and waited to see how the balance of the liquid and the 22 Islay botanicals can be further enhanced by resting in fine quality European and American oak casks. This experiment has been decades in the making, and we’re really pleased with the vibrancy and depth of the new liquids.”

Priced at $49.99, The Botanist Islay Cask Rested Gin is accessible at retail and select on-premise locations. The Botanist Islay Cask Aged Gin, exclusive to on-premise, is offered in limited quantities in select markets. Both products, with an ABV of 46%, come in a 750-mL bottle.
