Old Fashioned

About This Cocktail

Developed during the 19th century, the Old Fashioned has been around for ages. It gained popularity as the signature drink of Don Draper in "Mad Men" and today is the cocktail most commonly associated with whiskey. Made with three simple ingredients — whiskey, sugar and bitters — the Old Fashioned is a sweet, easygoing, spirit-forward cocktail.

Ingredients

  • ½ oz Demerara simple syrup
  • 2 oz Bourbon or Rye Whiskey
  • 3 dash Angostura Bitters

Instructions

  1. Combine simple syrup, bitters and whiskey. Stir well.
  2. Pour into a rocks glass over a large ice cube.
  3. Optional: Garnish with an orange peel or Luxardo cherry.

Additional Instructions & Suggestions

Demerara simple syrup instructions: mix equal parts Demerara sugar and water, stir and boil.

Whiskey recommendation: We recommend going with a bourbon for a super-sweet cocktail or a rye whiskey for a more balanced cocktail. The natural spice from rye can be effective in balancing out the sweetness from the simple syrup.

Basic bourbon recommendations: Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey 101, Evan Williams Single Barrel, Four Roses

Basic rye whiskey recommendations: Rittenhouse, Old Forester, Wild Turkey 101, Tincup
