The origin of the classic martini dates back to the late 19th century, evolving from the sweeter, vermouth-heavy Martinez cocktail popular during the Gold Rush era. As tastes shifted toward drier drinks in the early 1900s, bartenders pared it down to its sleek modern form: gin and dry vermouth, stirred over ice and garnished with a lemon twist or olive.

Ingredients

  • 2½ oz Gin (or Vodka)
  • ½ oz Dry Vermouth

Instructions

  1. Chill your glass by placing a martini or coupe glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water.
  2. In a mixing glass, combine the gin or vodka with dry vermouth, then fill the glass about three-quarters full with ice.
  3. Stir gently for about 30 seconds (don't shake), until the outside of the mixing glass feels frosty.
  4. Grab your chilled glass (if using ice water, pour it out first), then strain the mixture into it.
  5. Add a lemon twist for garnish.
