Monthly Tequila Roundup: Día de Los Muertos Takes Center Stage in the Most Buzzed About Tequila Releases of September 2023
Between Mexican Independence Day and Día de Los Muertos, September was rife with opportunities for colorfully styled tequila releases.
Though none of the big brands tossed their hats into the arena, this month showcased an interesting variety of up-and-comers alongside fan favorites experimenting with new ideas. Below, we’re taking a look back to highlight five of the most buzzed-about releases of September 2023.
Pasote Still Strength Blanco

The criminally underrated team over at Pasote Tequila just unveiled its first still-strength expression. Pushing the 40% ABV norm to its absolute limits, the new blanco reaches all the way up to a scorching 55% ABV — the legal maximum for tequila in the US.
Said to contain complex notes of sweet plantain, burnt sugar, greenery and a touch of white pepper, this Día de Los Muertos-themed release is a solo sipper through and through. As big fans of Pasote Blanco, we’re eager to see how this high-proof rendition compares to its little sibling. Bottles have hit the market for around $60.
Alma Del Jaguar Reposado

Alma Del Jaguar recently unveiled its second expression since launching earlier this year. The 2-month, additive-free reposado is aged in a combination of American white oak bourbon and French oak wine casks, imbuing a distinct mix of banana, honey and orange zest notes on the palate.
In keeping with its ferocious name, Alma Del Jaguar donates a portion of its proceeds to the Northern Jaguar Project, a binational conservation effort dedicated to protecting the flora and fauna of Mexico’s Northern Jaguar Reserve. The brand has racked up rave reviews from tequila enthusiasts over the past few months, so here’s hoping they launch an añejo in the near future. Alma Del Jaguar Reposado retails for $59.
Bozal – Cempasúchil Mezcal

Bozal Cempasúchil embodies Día de Los Muertos to the max.
Distilled with mandarin peels and marigold flowers — citrus-tinged symbols of the dead in pre-Hispanic Mexico — the 47% ABV mezcal goes above and beyond the typical skull-themed bottlings we’ve come expect around this time of year. The new ancestral expression is said to balance fresh notes of green pepper, orange zest, nutmeg and anise.
Cempasúchil was launched in the US for $129, though it appears that the limited release sold out quickly. Bozal’s catalog is filled with some of the best agave spirits releases of the past decade, so if you can find a bottle, be sure to snatch one up quick.
Soldadera Blanco Tequila Alternative

From mocktails to Dry January, alcohol-free spirits have been the talk of the year.
UK-based Mindful Brands is the latest to tackle the concept with Soldadera Blanco and Soldadera Cafe. Unlike the majority of its teetotaling competition, Soldadera is distilled with actual blue weber agave, albeit minus the boozy bite.
Though these can’t technically be called tequila, we give props to Mindful Brands for innovating the “alternative” market closer and closer to bonafide agave spirits. Sober consumers might find a lot to like in this budget-friendly $20 release.
Superbird Fuego

With a name straight out of an 80’s action movie, Superbird Fuego promises to ignite chaos. Hopefully, the right kind.
The latest launch from the Casa Komos Brands Group is infused with a proprietary jalapeño blend ideal for spicy margaritas and regret-inducing shots. Superbird Fuego joins a long list of pepper-infused agave spirits to hit the market over the past few years, including Fiero Serrano Blanco and bhut jolokia pepper-infused Ghost Tequila.
Retails for $25.
