For the first time in its three-decade history, Goose Island Beer Co. will release its Bourbon County Brand Original Stout in 10-ounce bottles, sold in four-packs. The new format launches on Black Friday 2025 and replaces the standard 16.9-ounce bottle for the flagship variant.

Goose Island confirmed that nothing about the stout’s recipe will change; this is simply a format shift. The smaller size aims to offer flexibility for side-by-side tastings and smaller serving occasions. According to the brewery, the change reflects “a shift in occasion,” with the goal of making it easier for drinkers to enjoy the imperial stout in various settings.

The 10-ounce four-pack will be exclusive to Bourbon County Brand Original Stout. Other variants in the 2025 Bourbon County lineup will remain in 16.9-ounce bottles.

“This move marks the next evolution for the Bourbon County family—offering more moments to crack open this beautifully complex stout,” the company said in a release.

Goose Island Bourbon County Original is aged in freshly emptied bourbon barrels. Goose Island describes the stout as showcasing flavors of fudge, vanilla and caramelized sugar. The beer is widely regarded as the originator of the bourbon barrel-aged stout category.

The annual Black Friday release of Bourbon County stouts is a major event among craft beer fans. The limited-edition series has grown to include multiple variants, often featuring adjuncts such as coffee, cherry wood or specialty barrels.

The new packaging format could appeal to drinkers looking for smaller servings or those organizing tastings. It also provides an opportunity to revisit the base beer that launched a now widespread brewing trend.
