'From Grass to Glass': Worthy Park Estate Expands Portfolio With Overproof Rum

Jamaican rum producers, Worthy Park Estate are introducing a premium white overproof rum to its permanent lineup. While Worthy Park already produces a white overproof under the brand Rum-Bar, this edition will be under the brand’s own name and part of the core range. 

The Worthy Park Overproof Rum will be joining the Worthy Park Select, Single Estate Reserve, Rum Cream and Rum-Bar, and the Worthy Park aged overproof expression 109. The company unveiled the latest addition at the Jamaica Food and Drink Festival’s Worthy Experience, held on the estate.

The term overproof denotes a spirit’s higher alcohol percentage. In the US Overproof rum is typically any rum that is over 50% ABV, although traditionally any spirit over 57.14% is considered true overproof.

“Worthy Park Overproof is partially derived from cane juice, where this lighter rum is skilfully blended with our molasses-based rums to achieve a crisper, more refined taste,” said Craig Nicholson, senior blender at Worthy Park to Jamaica Observer. “With an impressive 63 percent alcohol content, it retains its strength while offering a delightful honey sweetness, making it a more approachable choice when compared to other white overproof rums on the market, which often boast bold and overpowering flavor profiles.”

The Worthy Park Overproof rum is unlike the brand’s other high-proof offerings. This expression is partially made from cane juice which is then blended with the brand’s molasses-based rums to achieve a uniquely sweet and approachable 63% ABV rum.  

Those familiar with the brand will have most likely experienced Rum-Bar White Overproof Rum which is also made by Worthy Park but is under a different label. It is among the top choices of rums for mixing, particularly when making a daiquiri. The new Worthy Park Overproof likely has a completely different flavor profile that would make for a whole new cocktail experience. 

According to Jamaica Observer Tamika West, Marketing Manager commented “White overproof rum is the rum of choice among most Jamaicans, so it was only a matter of time before we introduced a premium white overproof offering under the Worthy Park brand name.” 

“There is so much more of a focus in the global rum community about identifying not only where rum is produced but where are the raw materials that make the rum from,” West continued. “The benefit of being a company that has a distillery, sugar factory, and cane fields is that we can be very genuine and authentic in creating a rum from grass to glass. The recent demand for rums made from cane juice, which is more common in the French islands, was also a reason why we thought it could be interesting to introduce a rum made using Jamaican cane juice for fermentation.”

It has not been stated as of yet when the Worthy Park Overpoof rum will reach the US market.
