The Times of India reported on Thursday that a 3-year-old girl died after accidentally consuming liquor from a bottle in her grandmother’s room. Her parents theorized that she confused it for water. The incident occurred in India’s Balrampur district. The unconscious girl was taken to the hospital and died the following day.

Authorities are conducting an autopsy to confirm the final cause of death.

The daughter’s mother was busy doing housework when the little girl entered her grandmother’s room and found a bottle of Mahua liquor. India Business and Trade reports that Mahua is a pot-distilled spirit made from sweet flowers.

The Times of India reported that the toddler was unsupervised for a lengthy amount of time, and her parents surmised that she thought the Mahua bottle was a bottle of water. The outlet reported that the toddler informed her mother she was feeling dizzy and that she wanted a bath just before she lost consciousness.

The child’s mother said she could smell the liquor on her daughter’s breath and rushed her off to the hospital with her husband.

According to Poison Control, just a small amount of alcohol can be dangerous to children. Alcohol causes low blood sugar and acts as a depressant on a child’s central nervous system, which can cause seizures, coma and even death.

A particularly grim account occurred in July 2022 when a mother and grandmother forced a 4-year-old girl named China Record to finish a bottle of Canadian Mist Whisky as a form of punishment. The little girl died, and her blood alcohol content was measured at 0.680. The mother, Kadjah Record, and grandmother, Roxanne Record, were indicted on first-degree murder charges.

“We all failed. We all failed,” said Ebony Record, Roxanne Record’s other daughter. “I should take blame too. I know what type of person my mom is. I know how my mom felt about China.”

Ebony Record described her mother, Roxanne, as abusive and claimed she enacted emotional and verbal abuse on her children and grandchildren. Ebony Record never reported her mother because she was afraid of her.

She wanted her mother to “pay for what she did.”
