On Tuesday, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris announced her much-anticipated running mate. The selection is Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a 60-year-old former educator and retired U.S. Army non-commissioned officer.

Walz is known for his Democratic-to-moderate political leanings and for becoming the highest-ranking retired enlisted soldier ever to serve in Congress. He’s also passed some fun state holidays in his five years as Minnesota’s governor.

In February 2023, Walz proclaimed Feb. 16 as Beer Day in Minnesota. The proclamation read as followed:

WHEREAS: Minnesota has a storied tradition of brewing across the state; and

WHEREAS: Minnesota is the home to August Schells, located in New Ulm and the second oldest family-owned brewery in the United States; and

WHEREAS: Minnesota is home to over 200 craft breweries across the state, suppling jobs, and economic growth to the state; and

WHEREAS: The consumers of beer in Minnesota have more options at their local breweries, bars and restaurants, and liquor stores than ever before; and

WHEREAS: The brewers of Minnesota have developed some of the most creative and respected brands in the United States; and

WHEREAS: The brewers of Minnesota have faced great adversity from the lingering effects of prohibition and COVID 19, yet they are resilient; and

WHEREAS: The brewers of Minnesota continue to satisfy and impress consumers throughout the world.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, TIM WALZ, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby proclaim Thursday, February 16, 2023, as:

BEER DAY

In additional beer news, Walz in May 2021 announced a partnership with the Craft Brewers Guild and Minnesota Distillers Guild to offer discounted drinks at participating breweries across Minnesota for anyone who showed proof of getting their COVID-19 vaccines.

Beyond beer, Minnesota even has a holiday dedicated to Beyoncé. In 2023, Walz declared July 20 — the day the star performed in Minneapolis — Beyoncé Day.
