Recently unsealed documents detail an alleged theft in Hillsborough Country, south of Tampa, Florida. Thieves made off with more than $1.6 million of alcohol from one of the largest US distributors using tractor-trailers.
On Oct. 5, CNN obtained police documents relating to the early morning theft at Republic National Distributing Company. This distributor operates in 38 states and employs around 14,000 people. Its portfolio includes major brands like Remy Martin Cognac, Kraken Rum, Del Maguey, Beefeater Gin and Jameson Irish Whiskey.
As part of the investigations, authorities issued a search warrant for an Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max. Investigators suspect the phone “contains specific information, technical data and evidence” relating to the large-scale liquor theft. According to the details of the warrant, the incident occurred on July 8, between 4:10 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. The thieves reportedly managed to take 4,277 cases of alcohol from the warehouse. The “unknown suspects” also removed the alcohol distributor’s video surveillance equipment.
Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office deputies obtained surveillance video from nearby businesses and identified the tractor-trailers used as part of the alleged crime. Deputies also discovered surveillance video from a tractor-trailer storage facility and were able to identify the trailers used during the burglary.
“While we are unable to comment at this time because this is an active law enforcement investigation, we have confidence that law enforcement is handling this matter seriously and taking all necessary steps to find the perpetrators of this crime,” RNDC vice president of corporate communications, Kanchan Kinkade told CNN.
The investigation is still ongoing and it appears that suspects have not been identified as of yet.
