Cobblestone Brands has recently launched its second spirit brand, Star & Key Rum, a single-estate rum from Mauritius. The rum is made from fresh cane juice produced on the island nation.

Cobblestone Brands from Dublin, Ireland, first launched Four Corners American Gin made from botanical sourced entirely from the US. Star & Key is the next spirit brand for Cobblestone and appears to be following a similar style of sourcing local ingredients for a product with a unique terroir.

The rum brand’s name was inspired by an old nickname for the island nation that is still shown on the country’s crest. Mauritius was known as “The Star & Key of the Indian Ocean” because of its natural beauty and strategic location along the historic trade routes between Europe and Asia.

Star & Key Single Estate Rum is crafted by Co-Owner of Cobblestone, Nick Wiehe on the 8th generation Wiehe family estate, Labourdonnais.  The estate is one of the oldest in Mauritius and is nestled amongst 1,500 acres of sugarcane and fruit orchards. Everything is grown, harvested, distilled and aged at the family estate.

According to Spirits Business, Star & Key’s marketing director, Gary McLoughlin, said, “Star & Key Rums capture a sense of place with unparalleled authenticity and character.”

“Mauritius was one of the first places in the world to cultivate sugarcane and, hundreds of years later, it is still the island’s main crop.

“Fresh cane juice retains everything it draws from the soil and climate throughout the growing season. Star & Key Rums utilize both red and yellow cane varietals grown on this one-of-a-kind estate to produce distinctively different rums.”

The brand has launched with two distinct flavors, Star & Key Passion Fruit Rum and Star & Key VSOP. The Passion Fruit Rum is made using rum that has been aged for 2 years in both Cognac and Bourbon casks. It was infused with fresh passion fruit also grown on the estate. The brand recommends using it in a ‘Ti Punch much like an agricole.

The VSOP rum is a single cask release made from rum distilled in a Coffey still and aged 4 years exclusively in French oak Cognac casks. The single cask is meant to be a sipping rum at 43% ABV.

The rums can be found in select liquor stores now and have an MSRP of $34.99 for the Passion Fruit edition and 44.99 for the Star &Key VSOP. For more information on Star & Key Rum visit the website.
