Today, Venezuelan rum producer, Santa Teresa released the 1796 Speyside Whisky Cask Finish. This edition is the brand’s first limited edition expression to be added to its triple-aged 1796 Solera Rum series.

The Solera series newcomer was made to bridge the gap between whisky aficionados and rum lovers. The Santa Teresa 1796 Speyside Whisky Cask Finish carries many of the characteristics found in the other Santa Teresa bottlings as it also undergoes the brand’s signature solera method of blending and aging. The distinct difference in this edition comes from the rare 13-month finishing process in casks previously used for highland whisky. The extended maturation in ex-whisky barrels from the Speyside region of Scotland gives this edition a unique flavor profile rarely seen in the world of Caribbean rum.

Santa Teresa’s use of the solera method, which is renowned for its use in sherry production,  establishes that all of their rums contain a uniform flavor profile and consistent taste. In this way,  the original cask is never emptied ensuring that every bottle carries notes of the very first 1796 cask. The distinctive approach taken to create the perpetual blend of Santa Teresa 1796 Speyside Whisky Cask Finish may set it apart as one of the world’s only rums to be made this way.

Speyside whisky is famous for its fruity flavor and lighter peat notes when compared to other smokier Scottish whiskies. Commonly matured in ex-sherry casks expressions from this region have been known to carry notes of apple, pear, honey, vanilla and spice.

Santa Teresa 1796 Speyside Cask Finish is bottled at 46% ABV.  The limited edition rum is described by the brand as having notes of toffee, sugarcane honey, malted barley, hints of apricot and dried fruits, caramelized almonds, and a hint of dark chocolate on the palate with a dry finish with a touch of black pepper spice.

Santa Teresa 1796 Speyside Whisky Cask Finish has an SRP of $49.99 and will be available both in-store at select retailers and online on the brand’s website.
