In Perth, Australia, two individuals in their twenties recently faced charges following an eight-hour standoff with law enforcement. The incident transpired at about 1:15 a.m. on Thursday when the reportedly intoxicated pair ascended scaffolding to reach the roof of a construction site, 9News reported on Friday.
Engaging in disruptive and hazardous behavior, footage of the incident appears to show one of the individuals tossing bags of concrete onto the road and drinking from a bottle of Smirnoff Vodka. 9News’ video also depicts the duo asleep on top of the roof with the booze bottle lying between them.
According to the report, the interference temporarily impeded workers’ ability to carry out their duties, prompting concerns about the safety of the site.
“When I rocked up I saw ’em – they had a bottle of vodka with ’em, so I was just like, ‘looks like they’re having a good time’,” a worker informed 9News. “But obviously it’s not safe for them to be up there.”
Amid the standoff, a police negotiator was summoned to the scene, yielding what was described as a “seemingly lighthearted” conversation. During the negotiation, one of the individuals requested a four-pack of “cruisers,” a type of vodka-based cooler, and the other expressed a desire for a vape, per the report.
Voicing disdain for the incident, Police Minister Paul Papalia informed News9 that the standoff was “complete stupidity” and added that the individuals potentially jeopardized others’ safety during the rescue efforts.
“What a waste of time and actually potentially putting other people in, at harm, in an effort to effectively rescue them,” he said, according to News9.
The duo, finally descending from the roof around 10 a.m., reportedly attempted to flee before ultimately surrendering to the police. News9 noted that both individuals were charged with trespassing, stealing and behaving in a disorderly manner.
