Plantation Rum invites you to travel the rum-producing world in a sip of its latest blended bottling. The Barbados-based Rum brand has added the first-of-its-kind Sealander expression to its portfolio to showcase rums from 3 different rum-producing regions spanning the Atlantic, South Pacific and Indian Oceans.
The blend is comprised of rum from three of the world’s most well-known rum-producing countries – Barbados, Mauritius and the Fiji Islands. Each of the rums highlights the distinct rum styles from their respective countries and comes together to create a unique blend not seen before in the Plantation line.
The Barbados portion of the mix comes out of Plantation’s very own West Indies Rum Distillery (WIRD). The rum from this island in the Caribbean is known for its tropical aging which presents heavier wood notes.
The second rum added to the blend comes out of Saint Aubin Distillery from the island of Mauritius, located off the coast of Madagascar. The rum made here most likely has a sugar-cane base instead of molasses since the estate of St. Aubin has been cultivating sugar cane since 1819 and is known for creating the first sugarcane-based rum on the island. The funky agricole notes of sugarcane often give flavors of ripe banana alongside grassy earthy notes.
The third rum to make the blend is from Rum Co. of Fiji Distillery in the South Pacific. As the only operating rum distillery on the island Rum Co. represents what Fijian rum is today. Mineral-rich volcanic soil lends to the unique flavors produced at the distillery and adds complexity to a blended rum such as Sealander.
Sealander is bottled at 40% ABV and the brand describes notes of honey, licorice, vanilla fudge and prune on the palate with a long finish of dried banana, cooked apple and tonka bean. Both pot and column stills are represented in the blend along with a combination of molasses and sugarcane juice-based rums.
The limited-edition Sealander expression is available from select spirits retailers in the UK from Sept. as well as exclusively on the Master of Malt website from Oct. 9th.
