Florida-based rum producer, Papa’s Pilar has announced the release of its 2023 legacy edition. The latest edition to the Legacy series was crafted in honor of surfing legend and big wave pioneer Greg Noll. A portion of the proceeds of all Legacy Edition 2023 sales will be donated to, Pipeline to a Cure, a nonprofit organization founded to celebrate the role surfing played in developing hypertonic saline, an important treatment for those living with cystic fibrosis.

The brand takes inspiration from novelist Ernest Hemingway who not only wrote stories based on thrilling deeds but was also seen as an adventurer and pioneer.

This year the Papa’s Pilar legacy edition honors another boundary-pushing adventurer Greg Noll. He was Nicknamed “Da Bull” and known for wearing his iconic black and white striped  “jailhouse” boardshorts while fearlessly facing down some of the world’s biggest waves.

Noll was the first surfer to ride a wave breaking on the outside reef at Banzai Pipeline in November 1964. He went on to become a prominent surfboard shaper, founding Greg Noll Surfboards.

“Much like Ernest Hemingway, Greg Noll was larger than life; he was a surfing trailblazer but also a committed craftsman. This duality, daring exploration and meticulous craftsmanship, not only applies to these legends, but is the heart of the Papa’s Pilar brand,” said Steve Groth, Founder and CEO of Papa’s Pilar. “We’re thrilled to share our Legacy Series, masterfully crafted using innovative processes and blended rums from around the world.”

This limited-release Legacy Edition blend is the third expression in the series and was bottled in 2023. Although the rum was only released this month in 2024. The previous 2022 edition was inspired by Papa Hemingway himself and artist Guy Harvey and donated to the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.

The 2023 legacy edition is a blend of rums from the Caribbean and South America, aged up to 7 years combined in Bourbon barrels and Spanish Sherry casks. The rum was then finished in Apple Brandy French Limousin oak casks with a small portion of rum that was finished in apricot and orange bitters casks.

As with the previous legacy editions, the bottle is uniquely designed while maintaining the signature WWII canteen shape that Papa’s Pilar is known for. The bottle comes wrapped in white canvas with black and white stripes on the back as an ode to the “jailhouse” swim trunks Noll was known for. The bottle’s medallion and the bespoke coaster that accompanies the bottle are crafted from wood remnants from Noll’s shop used to make surfboards.

“Working with the Papa’s Pilar team and Hemingway family on this one-of-a-kind rum to celebrate my father has been an honor,” said Noll’s son, Jed Noll.

A portion of proceeds for sales of the 2023 Legacy Edition will go to a cause that is near and dear to the Noll Family, Pipeline to a Cure. The foundation connects the surfing world with those living with cystic fibrosis.

The Legacy Edition 2023 is a limited edition as just 3,000 bottles are available with a suggested retail price of $109.99. The rum can be found online and in-store in California, Hawaii, Florida, New Jersey, South Carolina and Texas.
