A family in Livonia, Michigan are regulars at their local Outback Steakhouse, going there a couple times of month. During a recent visit, 12-year-old Mekyle Cureton was accidentally served alcohol after getting his go-to order, a virgin strawberry daiquiri.

“It didn’t taste like how when I had it the other times,” Cureton said, according to Fox 2. “It didn’t taste normal.”

Reportedly, during this visit, the Cureton received a boozy daiquiri and the unfamiliar taste was likely Outback’s well rum, Bacardi. The few drinks he took made him feel unwell.

“My head started hurting when I was leaving and my heart started beating as I was drinking it,” Cureton continued.

Cureton’s grandmother, Yolanda Collins also tried the drink but couldn’t determine if there was an issue.

“We don’t drink, so we couldn’t tell whether there was alcohol in it or not,” Collins said. “After that, he started letting us know that his heart was kind of racing.”

The family got a server’s attention and then the bartender was notified. Unfortunately, a mistake had been made, and alcohol was added to the 12-year-old’s drink order.

“It was supposed to be a virgin daiquiri, but it says a daiquiri,” she said, showing the receipt.

The restaurant comped the family’s meal and apologized for the error. However, Cureton wasn’t taking his first experience with alcohol well. The family took him to the hospital to be safe.

“Diagnosis was accidental exposure to alcohol and accidental ingestion,” Collins said. “I didn’t want him to have an alcoholic experience this way.”

The doctors could do little to help Cureton, but they gave him a Tylenol and advised him to rest. The next day, the 12-year-old is said to have experienced his first hangover.

“We take this situation very seriously and are thankful that the child involved was not seriously harmed. We have taken the appropriate disciplinary action, and all our bar and staff have been retrained to ensure this does not happen again,” a spokesperson for Outback Steakhouse told Fox 2.

The family doesn’t appear to be taking any further action against the restaurant and commented, “I just hope they don’t make the mistake again.”
