NFL Wide Receiver Stefon Diggs’s Beer Smashing Touchdown Celebration Results in Hefty $13k Fine

Last week the NFL fined Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs for excessive celebration and unsportsmanlike conduct. Diggs celebrated his first of three touchdowns against the Miami Dolphins at Highmark Stadium by spraying fans and fellow players with beer. The wide receiver must pay $13,659 for his “Stone Cold” Steven Austin style celebration.

With 10:02 left in the first half Diggs scored his first touchdown putting the Bills ahead of the Dolphins. After scoring, Diggs and his fellow players headed over to the stands where fans were excitedly cheering them on. Then, he took two beers from the people in the front row and smashed them together multiple times, spraying booze everywhere before throwing the cans back into the cheering crowd.
Diggs was not flagged for the celebration at the time, but the NFL deemed it unsportsmanlike conduct.
The fans who got their beers taken may get their 15 minutes of fame as well as a couple of cold ones on Diggs’s tab. “Yeah, I owe somebody like $18,” Diggs joked about owing the fans money for the beers he took.
Diggs went on to score two more touchdowns and in the end, the Bills defeated the Dolphins, 48 to 20. As of this past Sunday, the Bills’s current record is 3-2 after losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
This is not the Bills player’s first fine, and last season he received a $10,609 fine for taunting. Presumably, fines haven’t affected the wide receiver all that much. However, the beer-spraying touchdown will leave Diggs’s bank account just a little lighter after the fine.
The celebration may be a respite for NFL fans as of late since many sources have been focusing heavily on Taylor Swift’s budding romance with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The Bills will face off against the Chiefs in December.
