Miami Heat Sharpshooter Duncan Robinson Shakes up the Celebrity Tequila Formula With Investment in Desolas Mezcal

Miami Heat sharpshooter Duncan Robinson is moving beyond the “celebrity tequila” stereotype with his latest investment in Desolas Mezcal.
Founded in 2020 by Miami-based entrepreneur GG Mirvis, the brand defies most of the buzzwords typically ascribed to the smoky agave spirit. Distilled in San Luis Potosi from 25-year-matured “green giant” agave, Desolas trades out ashy flavor for grassy notes of lemon peel, vanilla, basil and mint.

Of course, high-profile investors are always welcome when it comes to the spirits industry. Robinson — who signed a $90 million contract with the Miami Heat in 2021, at the time the largest ever for an undrafted player in the NBA — recently celebrated by pouring up mezcal cocktails at Tap 42 Craft Kitchen & Bar in Miami.
Compared to the likes of Michael Jordan’s Cincoro Tequila, Yao Ming’s Yao Family Wines and Stephen Curry’s recently launched Gentleman’s Cut Bourbon, Robinson is betting big on an up-and-coming spirits category that hasn’t benefitted from much celebrity investment.
Within the NBA, LeBron James is one of the select few who has ventured into mezcal, though his brand Lobos 1707 is inarguably focused most on tequila. Elsewhere, Breaking Bad alum Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul launched Dos Hombres Mezcal in 2019.
Unlike most commercially available mezcal, made with agave Espadin, Desolas is distilled from the earthy, labor-intensive agave Salmiana.
