Man Arrested at Airport After Caught Attempting to Smuggle Over $100K Worth of Gold in Liquor Bottles

On March 12, an unnamed man was arrested by customs officials at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International airport in Amritsar, India, after he was caught attempting to smuggle over $100,000 worth of gold hidden in boxed liquor bottles, reported ABP Live.

Commenting on the arrest, a Twitter user wrote, “The guy needs a medal for hiding extremely illegal object inside a semi-illegal object.”

The man was intercepted by customs officials on the basis of profiling and suspicious activity while arriving from Sharjah on an Indigo flight, per ABP Live.

According to the report, the gold was estimated to have a market value worth Rs 86,41,200, which is equivalent to almost $104,202. The gold was found to be in the form of 13 biscuits.

“On searching his belongings, 13 gold biscuits weighing 1516 grams having market value of Rs 86,41,200 were found concealed in three liquor bottles. The gold has been seized and the passenger has been arrested,” commented the customs department, per the report.

Additional investigations are currently being conducted, according to the customs department.
