On Friday, the Irish Examiner reported that a groundbreaking new ban on liquor ads until after 9 p.m. is set to take place in Ireland starting January 2025.
After the law passes, it will be illegal to show alcohol ads during the day, and companies will only be able to air them for a short period in the evening. The ban will affect the airwaves, as well. Radio stations will be allowed to play booze ads from midnight to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to midnight.
“One of the primary objectives of the [bill] is to delay the initiation of alcohol consumption by children and young people,” claimed a spokesperson according to the Irish Examiner. “The evidence is consistent that the advertising of alcohol products increases the likelihood that young people will start to drink alcohol, or if they are already drinking to drink more.”
According to the Irish Examiner, Those violating the new law will be subject to potential court proceedings.
According to the outlet, the Public Health Alcohol Bill was passed in 2018, and certain initiatives have been gradually rolled out. Some of these include separating alcohol from other products in stores.
In September, the World Health Organization ruled that no amount of alcohol was safe for consumption, and according to many frustrated individuals in the drinks industry, the narrative towards knocking back a few drinks has changed in Europe.
Executive Director of the Portuguese Association for Wine and Spirits, Ana Isabel Alves claimed the following:
“We call this the de-normalization project,” Alves said per Meninger’s International. “This new narrative is about making alcoholic beverages less socially acceptable, like with tobacco.”
According to News Talk, Alcohol Action Ireland CEO Dr. Sheila Gilhaney claimed that major spirits brands produce content children are exposed to at a young age.
“Right now, Diageo is the number four broadcast advertiser to children,” Gilheany said according to News Talk. “So having a threshold before which you wouldn’t see alcohol advertisements is actually a really important thing in trying to reduce the exposure of children to alcohol, as well as the broader population as well.”
