A professor and leading expert in defense and security gave some insight into the indulgent habits of Kim Jong-un in a recent interview. The North Korean dictator reportedly has an extreme alcohol dependency and is known for spending large sums of money to import booze. He apparently has a fondness for Hennessy among other spirits and wines.

“Kim Jong-un is the 36th richest man in the world, and in 2018 took delivery of two special Maybach Mercedes S600s, has 17 palaces, and a private plane,” Professor Anthony Glees told the Daily Star. “And – according to his chef – he is an inveterate boozer, drinks Black Label Scotch whisky and Hennessy Brandy, and a heavy smoker.”

When Kim Jong-un isn’t executing security ministers by “flame thrower” after an unsuccess rocket launch, he is reportedly spending as much as $30 million a year importing spirits into North Korea.

Last month details about Kim Jung-un’s health surfaced as part of a report by the National Intelligence Service. A lawmaker for South Korea’s ruling People Power Party, Yoo Sang-bum revealed that the North Korean leader was holding sleeping pills used to treat “severe” sleeping disorders.

“He appeared tired with clear dark circles around his eyes during his public appearance on May 16, and was estimated to weigh over 140 kilograms according to AI analysis,” said Yoo.

Officially, Kim is 5ft 7in tall however there have been reports of him using lifts. In 2018, photos suggested he may be closer to 5ft 5in tall. Either way, according to the AI weight estimate, he is about 308 pounds. Kim’s weight gain which is presumably the result of his current life-style of overindulging has earned him an unflattering nickname.

“He is obviously grossly overweight – indeed a nickname for him is ‘Pang’, “the fat one”, but watch out if they catch you calling him that.” said Glees.

It has been suggested that Kim is in the midst of a mid-life crisis and has increased his alcohol consumption despite doctors advising him to cut back.

“He is drinking fine spirits and wines like a fish,” Jinwook told The Telegraph. “I heard he is crying after drinking a lot. He is very lonely and under pressure.”

Drinking heavily isn’t necessarily new for the dictator. In 2010, he claimed to have consumed 10 bottles of Bordeaux in one night according to Drinks Business

Kim Jung-un’s expensive habits are in stark contrast to the state of the country he leads. North Koreans are said to be heavy drinkers and typically consume cheap high ABV spirits like Chinese Kaoliang Liquor or illegally made home brews according to the Guardian

It is hard to say how the dictator’s health and habits will affect North Korea but the money spent on high-end spirits could arguably be put to better use for the nation’s people.
