In a late-night altercation on November 19, a 59-year-old individual allegedly threw a pint of booze at a police officer — and attempted to punch another — after being told he couldn’t bring it to the hospital he was about to be taken to for high levels of intoxication, the Royal Oak Tribune reported on Tuesday.

Reportedly known for a complex background involving mental health challenges, homelessness and habitual inebriation, the incident unfolded after the individual contacted the police. According to the report, he expressed a sense of mental unraveling and a desire to inflict harm on others.

Responding to the call, officers identified a heightened level of intoxication and decided to transport the individual to a hospital for evaluation. However, the cooperative spirit dissipated when the individual learned he couldn’t bring his pint of alcohol to the medical facility. In response, he hurled the bottle at an officer and attempted to physically engage another during the subsequent arrest, according to the Royal Oak Tribune.

Royal Oak police, led by Lt. Richard Millard, narrated the non-cooperation and the ensuing physical altercation, resulting in the individual facing dual charges of assaulting a police officer, each carrying a potential two-year felony.

“He didn’t cooperate,” said Millard, per the report. “When told he couldn’t bring a pint of liquor with him to the hospital he threw the bottle at one of the officers.”
