CBC News reported on Wednesday that Playalinda Brewing Company, a Florida brewery, is facing some backlash over the brand’s ironically named Epi Pen Peanut Butter Ale. Some individuals didn’t appreciate the joke.
The Sacramento Bee reported on Thursday that patrons of the brewery were so offended when they saw the name of the beer featured on the tap list for peanut butter week, they ended up leaving.
“Walked out when we saw the ‘epi-pen’ peanut butter beer option,” an individual commented on the brand’s Facebook page. “I’m guessing whoever thought it was funny to name it that has never seen their child almost die from an allergic reaction. Disgusting.”
Individuals railed against the brand online, calling it “discriminatory and ignorant” to people with nut allergies.
Epi Pens are autoinjectors that contain epinephrine. According to the brand’s website, epinephrine relaxes the muscles in the person experiencing the allergic reaction’s airways, lowers blood pressure, and relaxes muscles in the stomach, bladder and intestines.
“As an adult who has a peanut allergy my entire life — I find this hysterical,” an individual responded. “It’s dark humor! Sometimes you have to laugh at things. I genuinely do not think this company was trying to be hurtful.”
Regardless, Playalinda Brewing Co. continued to face a barrage of negative Facebook and Tripadvisor reviews after the company promoted the controversial beer.
It appears the largest beer controversy to date has largely died down. Over a year ago, the beer behemoth Bud Light faced a massive boycott which caused it to hemorrhage $1 billion after the brand chose to tap the transgender influencer Dylan Mulveney for a campaign.
A conservative-led boycott which involved bomb threats at facilities, celebrities like Kid Rock shooting cases of Bud Light cans and an all-out culture war ensued.
The Sacramento Bee cites that Playalinda’s peanut butter beer has “generally favorable” reviews on Untappd, despite the fact the beer’s name might offend certain customers.
“This would stop my son from drinking the ale,” a person commented according to the Sacramento Bee. “I’m all for it. Complete transparency to the point of blatancy.”
